El sistema de la Restauración en España se extendió entre 1875 y 1931, tras el regreso de los Borbones con Alfonso XII. Su instauración se debió al pronunciamiento de Martínez Campos y al proyecto político de Antonio Cánovas del Castillo, cuyo objetivo era garantizar la estabilidad y la continuidad dinástica. Tras la muerte prematura de Alfonso XII en 1885, la regencia de María Cristina mantuvo el sistema hasta la mayoría de edad
